Until the mid-'50s when the growing impact of television forced radio to rethink its long-established formats, most successful bands and singers made radio transcriptions -- fifteen minute programs created exclusively for broadcasting and not for sale to the general public.

Now that the fulltime working Hawaiian style steeler is a rare and diminishing species, this set is of particular interest as it allows us to eavesdrop on a talented group of fulltime professionals knocking out eighteen tracks possibly in one day with not one alternative take. And today when bands take up to six months to record one track, that certainly makes you think!  Our sound-clip is “Maui Girl”.
