Long, long ago on an island far, far away, the Hawaiian prince Leleiohoku fashioned the dreamy love song: “Kaua I Ka Huahuai” which translates as: “We Two In The Spray”. The song quietly bubbled along until, in 1930 (or thereabouts), Johnny Noble, bandleader at the Moana Hotel on Waikiki Beach, transformed it into the very jazzy: “Tahuwahuwai”… better known as: “The Hawaiian War Chant”. This collection, mostly drawn from earlier Cumquat releases, will no doubt be of interest to archivists and historians – but its real purpose is to reveal to a younger generation of steel guitar players, the wide diversity of approaches these inventive early masters could apply to one particular song.
