In 1935, not long after Sol had taken up the electric instrument, he recorded fourteen, fifteen minute, episodes of “Memories Of Hawaii” for the Atlas Radio Corporation (USA). The original programs were issued as 16 inch vinyl transcriptions, created specifically for radio broadcasting purposes and not for sale to the record buying public. In the 1950s as rapid rise of television pushed radio onto the backburner and, the rise of Rock’n Roll coupled with the advent of portable transistorised radios, forced a drastic rethinking of its presentation formats, all over the world the radio industry jettisoned or destroyed these – what they thought were now useless, no longer useable – valuable discs. Collectors everywhere became rubbish bin or junk shop scavengers, and it is only through the dedication of such men that we now have access to them.
