Sound Clip From: “Ninipo”

To fulfil a long-term, high profile, engagement at New York’s palatial Roosevelt Hotel, Johnny Pineapple’s Native Islanders underwent a name change. The Hawaiian language approximation of Roosevelt was Lukewela and since Abe Lang from the islanders had negotiated the contract, he temporarily took over as leader and adopted the persona of “Duke Lukewela”.

The original Islanders plus the violinist Tony Atero throughout their Roosevelt sojourn became “Lukekewela’s Royal Hawaiians”. This collection contains thirty-six previously un-released radio transcription performances. Check out this soundclip of Jack de Toro on steel and the Duke himself interpreting “Ninipo”.
