The first years of television drew an unprecedented wave of musical talent into the Melbourne modern jazz scene. To counter the effect of TV upon their creativity, these musicians set about generating a healthy underground jazz movement of their own. Jam sessions and experimentation with new forms, unusual harmonic progressions and modalities in both small and big band settings, were weekly events.Since their musical experiments were of little or no interest to either the rock-happy record industry, the sessions usually took place after hours or on Sunday afternoons in secluded studios. Fortunately, a few far-sighted engineers came to the party and made sure their achievements were properly recorded. This is the first of many Cumquats that document those sessions.
