Frank Smith (1927 – 1974) was an inspirational figure and one of the most influential musicians in Australian Jazz history. Midway through Frank’s sojourn as band-leader at Embers Jazz Club in South Yarra, the great pianist, Oscar Peterson - arriving in L.A. after a successful season at Embers, met the saxophonist and jazz master, Benny Carter who was to be Embers' next featured artist. Oscar warned him, “You’d better watch yourself down there, there’s a guy named Frank Smith who’ll blow your @$$ off!”

Frank saw himself as more than a musician, he had dreams of becoming an animator, cartoonist, graphic artist, comedy writer and many other things – chances are if his life hadn’t been cut so short - he might well have succeeded.
