The Nebraska born trumpeter, conductor, composer and arranger, Harry Owens arrived in Honolulu in 1934 as the newly appointed Musical Director of The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Hawaii’s most prestigious music and entertainment venue. His assignment: to create and orchestrate the many still un-notated island meles and shape his findings into danceable, commercial orchestrations for his totally new and very large ensemble. He assembled a library of island themes, original Hawaiian-flavoured compositions, arrangements of Hit Parade favourites and initiated the orchestra which consisted of 50% mainland brass, reeds and strings and 50% native musicians into his newly-imagined style.

Thanks for the Harry Owens discs. They are very well done. I have quite a collection of these records on Decca and Mac Gregor, but they don't sound as good as these tracks... I also have listened to the interview disc. I wish we had such a disc for all of our favorites. It's a worthwhile piece of historic information. This has been a very pleasing day. Thanks again for the fine discs.Ferris Ross, California, USA
